Before I discharged from the Air Force in the 70's, I bought the book Dress for Success. I then scraped up enough money to buy a Navy Blue Suit, Red Tie, White Shirt and Black Shoes. The look I wanted was IBM. It took me only 4 days to find a job in High Tech Management for a large Insurance Company.
