It's still winter in North America. There are many days of frigid weather ahead as nature still has its quota of arctic fronts to deliver.

Characterized by sunny and warm days, the hours are deceptive. But February is a weather transition month whereby there is the slightest trend of better things to come. But not without peril.

Last year, a great example was when Texas was hit by an Arctic storm of biblical proportions on February 10.

Known as The Great Texas Freeze, it was terrible. While expected, its magnitude and duration were a surprise. Compounded with multiple other cold fronts, Texas quickly became a tundra.

In February, the weather tries hard to transition cold, miserable periods to days of warmth and bliss, but it doesn't happen quickly. The atmosphere becomes a war zone of warm and cold air colliding, resulting in severe thunderstorms in the great plains and south, spawning tornadoes, floods, and general chaos. The effects are days with 70-degree highs and the following day temperatures in the 30's.

The touch of severe weather is a harbinger of what to expect in March.
