How A Story Idea Got Twisted and Ended Up Being Off-Topic but Great
It is not the process; it is the result that matters
It all started one rainy autumn night. Dinner was over, the dogs were settled, and the grandkids set for the evening. I could declare the day over and take care of myself.
I’m Granddad, a paternal overseer of a moderate-sized house filled with my daughter, four grandkids, five dogs, two cats, and a friend who rents a room.
Chaos is the norm; quiet time is sacred.
My evening routine has been the same for years. I do a final house check, flip off the lights, and retreat to the luxury and solitude of my Grandad’s Cave.
On this particular night, I wanted to watch a movie. Any movie would be good. I randomly selected Where the Buffalo Roam.
It is an early Bill Murray and Peter Doyle film produced in 1980. It had slipped under my radar when it was released.
It’s a biographical comedy about the counterculture journalist Hunter S. Thompson. A real-life writer who either delighted his readers or pissed them off. One of the first Gonzo Journalists, writing for Rolling Stone magazine and other publications in the sixties and seventies and authoring a few books.
