I Found The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow: It's a Girl Scout Cookie Distribution Site
A sight replicated in thousands of locations throughout the country
My daughter asked me to help pick up cookies for my granddaughter's local Girl Scout troop. Being Granddad and semi-retired with a few hours to spare, I couldn't refuse.
Not thinking what I was getting into, I assumed I was going to a church, putting a few boxes in the trunk, and then driving off. Little did I realize how massive an effort cookie distribution is. I found myself involved in a complex, well-orchestrated event that rivaled many organized events.
On the day the troop needed my help, the cookie boss told me to drive to one of the local school district's sports complexes. And from there, everything would be self-explanatory.
Upon arrival, hundreds of volunteers were working. Some were directing traffic, others operating checkpoints. Many handed out loading manifests, and others ensured traffic moved into the correct lanes accommodating order pickups. Our instructions were to stay in our vehicles and let the onsite staff do the loading.
The message was clear. Do what they say or deal with the head Cookie Leader. And we all know it is not good to question the lead…
