I Watched Saturday Night Fever and Had to Take a Shower to Wash Off All The Disco Music

It’s hard to believe civilization survived the disco era

I was there, as were many others who are now filling the ranks of senior citizens. We were the bell bottom generation with silk shirts, tight jeans, and corduroys.

Now and then, I have visions of flashing lights and disco balls, and I hear music with a funky sound making me want to grind my hips and reach for the moon.

When those visions creep into my brain, I go to Youtube and watch a few videos of disco dancing. A minute or two watching, and I’ve had enough.

As annoying as the music was, the times were fun. We were young but not necessarily innocent — just a group of young adults looking for a good time on Saturday night.

Remember disco music? It was the obnoxious transition between rock and roll and the funky sounds of new electronic synthesizers. It was the music of the seventies. And by the early eighties had faded like a bad thunderstorm.

Fortunately, outlaw country was emerging, and rock and roll were still strong, as were the blues and folk. Disco was a great reminder that there were other things to do on the weekend. Albeit I will admit, there were some exciting local…
