Your essay reminds me of two make believe authors who fit the bill as deviant, homophobic and alcoholic: Hank Moody in the cable series Californication and Melvin Udell in As Good As It Gets. Hank played by David Duchovny and Melvin played by Jack Nicholson. I read the writers for both had Hemmingway in mind when they created the characters.
