Every year in late April, I watch The Graduate. It is a tradition I started fifteen years ago. It’s my way of acknowledging the upcoming graduations for high school and university students.

Watching a film is more fun than attending ceremonies. Even if it is your child, grandchild, niece, or nephew graduating, the formats of the presentations are tedious.

The Graduate was released in 1967 to much acclaim. It is the story of Ben Braddock, a recent college graduate sheltered by proud parents. Dustin Hoffman plays Ben as the breakthrough role in his acting career.

The movie pushed the boundaries of sexual explicitness in the sixties. Nowadays, there’s more skin and action on Facebook reels, tv commercials, and TikTok.

The movie was a hit in 1967, and more than fifty years later is still a hit. Amongst the many awards, it’s been nominated for and received, Dustin Hoffman and Mike Nichols, the Director, had lifetime achievement awards bestowed upon them by the American Film Institute.
