Traveling On a Make-a-Wish Journey: A Trip of Inspiration, Hope and Reflection

A story of helping a sick child enjoy a small slice of life

It was 5 AM in early November. The family was up, excited, and anxious to get going. We were leaving on a trip to Orlando as honored guests of the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

For those not familiar with The Make-a-Wish Foundation, their mission is to: Create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

Kids who qualify are given the opportunity to 'Make-a-Wish,' and the Foundation will do what it can to make it come true. That is, within reason, without compromising the child's health.

At age three, my grandson was diagnosed with kidney disease, which would ultimately require a transplant or dialysis. He was nine years old when we made the trip. By that time in life, he was at a late Stage 2 early Stage 3 failure and was on the transplant list waiting for a donor.

Working with his Pediatric Nephrology team, their Social Services group nominated him for a Make-a-Wish grant. After an interview process, his wish to go to Orlando was granted by the Foundation.
